President Obama with Big Brother, Eric Coler

For a year now, Big Brother, Erik and his Little, Mateo have been matched in the Big Brothers Big Sisters of NYC's Education Initiative - Community Impact Program. According to Erik, since being matched, his relationship with Mateo has certainly grown. In addition to being a mentor, Erik is a political activist in New York City and recently attended an event hosted by the Democratic Party. An especially special guest was also in attendance, it was President Obama! Keeping with the focus of helping his Little stay academically motivated and on track with his grades, Erik asked President Obama to send a special video message to Mateo.

Little Brother, Mateo was certainly excited to see the video and reflects on President’s Obama’s words of encouragement. Since viewing the president's message to him, Mateo has been making even greater effort to become a better student and serve as a leader within his community.

Like many of our Bigs, Erik's forethought when giving this once in a lifetime moment was with his Little and how he might give him the experience too. This warm story was made possible by a great mentor who deeply shares the mission and vision of Big Brothers Big Sisters of NYC.
