Bigs United is a passionate group of African American mentors and other dedicated volunteers who have launched an aggressive grassroots campaign to recruit additional African American volunteers to look out for youth coming up so they can look forward to brighter futures. Their goal is to inspire more adults to become mentors to children in need and empower more African American children through one-to-one mentoring relationships.

Founded by Big Brother Danny Madden, Bigs United is a valuable resource with a wealth of knowledge and first-hand experience regarding the power of mentoring. They are always happy to share their stories and support each other. Through their personal experiences, both with our Littles and in our communities, Bigs United is working together to cultivate and establish powerful relationships between them, Big Brothers Big Sisters of New York City and community organizations.

Bigs United supports efforts to uplift communities through mentoring, by focusing on NYC neighborhoods with large African American populations, holding events at iconic Harlem churches, restaurants, and barber shops, as well as historic African American venues. These include the Harlem Jazz Museum, The Apollo Theatre, and the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture.

In celebration of National Mentoring Month, Black History Month and Martin Luther King Jr’s Birthday, Bigs United also conducts targeted outreach to local African American fraternities, sororities and college alumni.

Meetings are open to all African American volunteers in Big Brothers Big Sisters of NYC’s mentoring programs - and to anyone interested in becoming a volunteer! Check out the next Bigs United meeting and their other events and activities below:
