Ryan E. Maguire: What
it Means to Be a "Big"
I signed up and went through the interviewing process in hopes to meet my Little.
I was accepted and opening day arrived. I entered the company cafeteria, not
know what to expect and what I found was similar to any playground at any school;
one crowd (of kids) on one side and another crowd (of employees) on the other.
So I decided to break the mold and sit with the other crowd (of kids). I sat
next to a young man and began to talk. We found out we had a lot in common and
quickly began talking and joking around. As the program began, we had an ice
breaker to determine our matches. I wandered the room to find my Little. When
we found each other, we realized that neither of us needed to move from our
original seat. My Little was the young gentleman that I had befriended before
the program started!! This was great; we had discovered our relationship before
BBBS had the chance to tell us. This speaks to the power of the human spirit
and the matching ability of the Big Brother & Big Sisters!
