Sidewalks of New York Annual Awards Dinner

Eli Manning

This year's Sidewalks of New York Annual Awards Dinner on Monday, April 14th at the Waldorf=Astoria was a huge success! The event attracted over 1,000 attendees and raised over $2 million dollars to help us serve New York City's underprivileged children. As usual, the dinner program involved our Little Brothers and Sisters. Together with their Bigs, they described the powerful effects of the mentoring relationship on their lives as they presented awards to our distinguished honorees: Brian L. Roberts, Comcast Corporation; Michelle Ebanks, ESSENCE Communications; Angela Burt-Murray, ESSENCE magazine; and Eli Manning, New York Giants.

Allan Luks, Executive Director of Big Brothers Big Sisters of NYC for the last 18 years, received a surprise honor in becoming the first recipient of the Allan Luks Legacy Award. This Allan award has been created to honor Allan's long-standing dedication to serving the underserved and to the children of New York City. It will now be presented annually to individuals who also have demonstrated commitment and leadership in community service and advocacy.

Special thanks to: Edward L. Gardner, BBBS of NYC Chairman Emeritus; event chair Evan R. Chesler, Presiding Partner of Cravath, Swaine & Moore LLP; and Soledad O'Brien, our Mistress of Ceremonies.

In addition to print coverage in The New York Times and New York Sun, the event was featured online:

"See Our Mentoring Through Medicine Pilot Program In the News"
Our innovative pilot program received a "HIGH 5" from Fox 5 News for our hands-on approach to changing young lives through a team of dedicated resident physicians at Brookdale Hospital.

Allan Luks, BBBS of NYC's Executive Director, was chosen to receive the 2007 Lewis Hine Awards for Service to Children and Youth. The awards were initiated by the National Child Labor Committee (NCLC), a national non-profit organization, which is dedicated to defending the rights of children in the workplace and fighting for universal education. The awards are now in their nineteenth year and are presented annually by the NCLC to only five non-profit professionals in the nation for their unheralded and exceptional service to young people. The Lewis Hine Awards seek to identify not the one-time hero, but the individual who has made a commitment to the well-being, growth and development of youth. The winner’s efforts symbolize the exceptional work done to improve the lives of young people.
