Latino Volunteer Mentoring Program in NYC

"Atrévete a cambiar una vida"
"Dare to change a life"

Big Brothers Big Sisters of NYC is the nation’s first and New York City’s largest youth mentoring organization, serving the community for 110 years. BBBS of NYC has taken pride in adapting our services to meet the ever changing needs of our community. Our Latino Bigs affinity group launched to help better serve the growing Latino population here in NYC as Latino youth currently make up 30% of children waiting for a mentor. We serve children in all 5 boroughs of NYC with the majority of our mentees coming from the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Queens.

Founded in 2007 Latino Bigs , is a grassroots movement composed of socially conscious Latino volunteers and is part of Big Brothers Big Sisters of NYC. Our mission is to empower the Latino community through one-to-one mentoring to ensure that Latino children in NYC have access to positive adult role models to help expand their horizons, realize their potential, enrich their futures and change their lives. Latino Bigs also aids BBBS of NYC mentors by ensuring each match has the peer support needed to thrive by providing insight on how to develop strong mentoring relationships. In it’s first year in existence, Latino Bigs helped the agency increase the our pool of Latino male mentors by 83%.

Consisting of alumni, current, and potential mentors, the group hosts events and develops relationships with organizations serving the New York City Latino community. The group meets monthly, typically on the 1st Wednesday of the month and new members are always welcome. To join Latino Bigs contact Diego Romero at dromero@bigsnyc.org.

The Mentoring Experience

Watch as some current Latino Bigs members share their experiences on being a mentor in NYC.

Community Awareness

Latino Bigs has adopted the historic neighborhood of Spanish Harlem, one of the largest predominantly Latino communities in NYC, in order to become a resource for the community and create awareness of Latino Bigs’ mission. We are partnering with local organizations and businesses in order to further support Latino youth through our one-to-one mentoring programs.

Throughout the year Latino Bigs, in conjunction with our corporate and community partners, hosts many events ranging from our annual Step Up to the Plate softball fundraiser to a series of community panel discussions to raise awareness about the group’s mission. Our partners also help us share our message on the power of mentoring in addition to providing resources for our programs.
