Big Brothers Big Sisters of NYC 2016 Academic Recognition Awards & Scholarships

Big Brothers Big Sisters of NYC values academic excellence, community leadership and good sportsmanship. Our annual Academic Recognition Awards recognize and honor the outstanding academic achievements, both in and out of the classroom.

Please be aware of the following dates:

  • Friday, February 5th - Scholarship and Award applications are available
  • Monday, March 7th - Drafts of personal statement essays due to jjoseph@bigsnyc.org (strongly recommended)
  • Wednesday, March 16th - Drafts of personal statement essays returned with comments
  • Friday, April 1st - Scholarship and Award application deadline (in person submissions of all materials must be received by 8pm and email submissions by 11:59pm)
  • June 2016 - Academic Recognition Ceremony

Elementary School Awards (1st – 5th Grades)


Academic Excellence

Displays steady excellence in a specific subject

Applicants should maintain 3’s & 4’s in one or more of these subjects

  • Math Titan
  • Star Reader
  • Writing Wizard*
  • Science Explorer
  • Emerging Artist*

*For Littles interested in the Emerging Artist or Writing Wizard please submit a picture of you and your artwork or a piece of writing that you have worked on in school/spare time.

What needs to be included in your application?
  • A typed essay written by the student
    - All drafts of essays must be submitted to Jordan Joseph (jjoseph@bigsnyc.org) by Monday, March 7th
  • An academic letter of recommendation from someone at your school
  • A letter of recommendation from your Big
  • Your most recent transcript – ask your school for a copy
  • Your most recent report card – ask your school for a copy

Junior High School Awards (6th – 8th Grades)


Junior High School Awards

Academic Achievement Award
Number to be awarded - 3
Maintain a GPA above 90 (A- or 3.6)
Qualifications:
  • Honor roll student (minimum of at least one marking period)
  • Significant academic progress or steady excellence in a specific subject

Most Improved Scholar Award
Number to be awarded - 1
No GPA Requirements
Qualifications:

  • Sought extra help and improved classroom grade(s)
  • BBBS of NYC SMART goal achievement
  • Improved behavior in classroom and in school

Leadership Award
Number to be awarded - 1
Maintain a GPA above 90 (A- or 3.6)
Qualifications:

  • Displays good citizenship, role modeling and/or leadership in and out of classroom
  • BBBS of NYC SMART goal achievement
  • Involved in extracurricular activities

What needs to be included in your application?
  • A 250-300 word typed personal statement written by the student
    - All drafts of essays must be submitted to Jordan Joseph (jjoseph@bigsnyc.org) by Monday, March 7th
  • An academic letter of recommendation from someone at your school
  • A letter of recommendation from your Big
  • Your most recent transcript
  • Your most recent report card

High School Awards & Scholarships (9th – 12th Grades)


High School Awards

Aspiring Scholar Award
Number to be awarded - 2
Maintain a GPA above 90 (A- or 3.6)
Qualifications:
  • Displays good citizenship, role modeling and/or leadership in and out of classroom
  • Involved in extracurricular activities

Civic Engagement Award
Number to be awarded - 2
Maintain a GPA above 83 (B or 3.0)
Qualifications:

  • Displays good citizenship, role modeling and/or leadership in and out of classroom
  • Active in community service and/or dedicated commitment to an outside project or agency benefiting the community
  • Involved in extracurricular activities

College Ready Award
Number to be awarded - 2
Maintain a GPA of 80 or higher
Qualifications:

  • Math and/or ELA Regents score of 80 or higher
  • Attended and completed at least one BBBS of NYC Education Initiative program in the 2015-2016 school year
  • Took AP or College Now course and passed with a score 75 or higher


High School Scholarship Opportunities


Funds may be used to support tuition, fees, and any other related academic expenses.

Maintain a GPA of 2.75 or higher.

Qualifications:

  • Be a high school senior who plans to enroll in a full-time undergraduate course of study at an accredited two-or four-year college in the fall semester of 2016
  • Be in a Big Brothers Big Sisters of NYC mentoring program
